Charles and Hilary Keighley were both born and raised in Kenya. Charles studied Agriculture at London University specializing in Animal Husbandry. Hilary trained as a physiotherapist at Kings College Hospital in London. Sheep have always been one of Charles’ passions and he established a Dorper flock in Kenya in the early 1980’s. In 1990 the family migrated to Australia and settled on the Monaro managing a Merino Stud for 17 years, then, having seen the potential of the Dorpers in Kenya for meat production under dry conditions, were excited when they were able to establish their own stud at Laikipia. Laikipia (meaning treeless plains in Masai), is a 520 hectare property on the Monaro, 10 kms south of Cooma. The average rainfall is 450 mm though for the past 10 years it has been considerably less than this.
